CONTENTS

Hello, well this was supposed to be the Winter edition of the E.C.E.D newsletter, but since winding down from the Prague General Meeting last October there seems to have had so little time to get this information together. We would like to send out these newsletters more regularly, but that depends upon having news to report. Please, please if you have any information, requests or news items you would like other E.C.E.D members to know about do send it to the E.C.E.D in London.

At present we are receiving about one request a week from professionals who want information from the E.C.E.D database, some of these are clinical requests usually asking for names of therapists for patients who are moving to a new country, others are research or academic contacts. We now have 440 members in the E.C.E.D, however Eastern and Southern Europe are under-represented and we are still hoping to extend the network even further. If you know of anyone who would like to be included in the network please introduce them to the E.C.E.D and ask them to contact us in London.

E.C.E.D GENERAL MEETING: DUBLIN, 1995

The Prague meeting was a great success attended by 120 delegates in the wonderful setting of the Waldstein Palace. The meeting provided that essential mix of work, discussion and socialising time. I am sure everyone who attended would want to re-thank Dr. David Krch and Professor Faltus for all their efforts and for being such brilliant hosts. At the Prague meeting delegates voted to hold the next general meeting of the European Council in Dublin, Ireland. Gerard Butcher, Mike Bourke and John Griffin have the unenviable task of following the Czech team. Not wanting to be outdone by the Prague setting they have arranged for the meeting to be held in Dublin Castle on September 21st-22nd 1995 and are beginning programme planning and registration now. Please do contact the organisers with any suggestions or proposals of material for the meeting. More details are given on the first announcement which is enclosed.

EUROPEAN EATING DISORDERS REVIEW

The British review of Anorexia and Bulimia re launched as a new journal in 1993 (Eating Disorders Review) has gone through another identity crisis and for 1994 is renamed the European Eating Disorders Review. The content remains the same in having a more European focus than the International Journal and retaining a special interest in clinical practice in eating disorders. The price for individual subscribers remains £40.00 in UK, $65.00 outside UK; Institutions £50.00 in UK, $85.00 outside UK. However Wiley are now offering a 12% reduction to £35.00 and $57.00on individual subscriptions for E.C.E.D members.

Any papers you wish to submit for review should be sent to:

Ms. Joanna Vincent, Editorial Assistant, European Eating Disorders Review, EDA, Sackville Place, 44, Magdalen Street, Norwich, Norfolk, NR3 1JU, UK.

Recently a few members have contacted the E.C.E.D commenting upon the increased subscriptions fees for the American based International Journal of Eating Disorders which are now $175.00 for individuals outside USA for eight issues a year. We are still trying to negotiate a discount for E.C.E.D members with Wiley USA but because of their management changes we have no news as yet. Wiley UK are hoping to do a double deal with a special discount if you take both journals, but they can't give a final price for this until the USA office sets its own discount. However this should be sorted by mid-Summer so contact Tracy Clayton at Wiley UK for further information before you re-subscribe to either journal. (See the enclosed Wiley leaflet).

RECENT PUBLICATIONS BY E.C.E.D MEMBERS

E.C.E.D members publishing relevant books are welcome to send information and/or review copies to the E.C.E.D for inclusion in the newsletter. When possible the E.C.E.D will negotiate with the publishers for discounted rates for E.C.E.D members. See the enclosed leaflets from Afterhurst for a 20% discount on all of their eating disorders catalogue including LEA, Guildford Press, Bruner/Mazel and Allyn & Bacon publications; and 10% discount from John Wiley publishers on their books.

THE COURSE OF EATING DISORDERS: LONG-TERM FOLLOW-UP STUDIES OF ANOREXIA & BULIMIA NERVOSA
W. Herzog, H-C Deter, W. Vandereycken (1992) Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg. £60.50 (Unfortunately we couldn't get a discounted price for this) This edited volume is an essential source book for anyone involved in treatment or research into the outcome of eating disorders. However the book is only in hardback at present and the price may deter some potential readers. It includes contributions from authors throughout Europe and North America from a range of academic and clinical perspectives. The book will be enlightening for all those who seek more understanding of their own therapeutic successes and their failures.
DISSOCIATIVE EXPERIENCES, TRAUMA AND HYPNOSIS.
Johan Vanderlinden (1993) Eburon Publishers, Oude Delft 224, 2611 HJ Delft Netherlands. $25.00 A valuable resource for workers interested in the study and treatment of traumatic experiences and dissociative disorders. The book has a particular focus upon eating disorders and describes hypnotherapeutic techniques in treatment of traumatised eating disorder patients.
BINGE EATING: NATURE, ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT .
C. G. Fairburn & G. T. Wilson. eds (1993) Guildford Press, New York, London (£31.00) £24.80 with E.C.E.D discount. This multi-author work discusses history, clinical characteristics, epidemiology, etiology, evaluation and treatment of binge eating from a range of perspectives. Unsurprisingly dominated by North American authors discussion of DSM-IV classification is prominent. Fairburn & Wilson's own "Comprehensive Treatment Manual" for cognitive-behavioural therapy of binge eating and bulimia nervosa is slipped in as a final chapter, although psychodynamic and pharmacological treatments are also given space. If you are interested in binge eating or are one of those sceptical of the recent move to privilege binge eating above other aspects of disordered eating you will find this book essential.
WHY WOMEN ? GENDER ISSUES AND EATING DISORDERS
Bridget Dolan & Inez Gitzinger (1994) Athlone Press, London (£9.95) £7.96 with E.C.E.D discount (see enclosed leaflet). A revised and updated edition of the book originally published by the E.C.E.D in 1990. This new edition includes a foreword by Susie Orbach and additional chapters on the media influences on eating problems, using the metaphor of compulsive eating in groups; and exploring eating disorders through psychodrama and art therapy.

BOOK REVIEWS

We want to begin a short book review section of the newsletter and would like to invite you to contribute reviews on any new eating disorders related book you may come across. Rather than send out review copies to members who may not have the time or specific interest to do this we are looking for people to volunteer as reviewers. If there is a new book you would like to review write to Bridget Dolan in London with the details and she will request a free review copy for you from the publishers - which you get to keep afterwards. We are particularly keen to include non-English texts which may not have come to the attention of the London steering group.

We have review copies of:

If you would like to review one of these books for the newsletter please write in and we will send it to you.

CONTACTS

If you want to make research or professional contacts you can send a brief description to the E.C.E.D and we will put the information into our next newsletter reaching over 400 eating disorder workers at one time.

SWEDISH ANOREXIA/BULIMIA SOCIETY
The E.C.E.D has been sent information from the Swedish Anorexia/Bulimia Society. This is an national association for clinicians and researchers begun in Stockholm in 1993. The society is intended exclusively for professionals working in the field of eating disorders. Its main aim is to systematise knowledge about and improve treatment methods for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related conditions in Sweden. This is achieved primarily by supporting research, by systematising a knowledge database and by encouraging co-operation and exchange of experiences both by colleagues within Sweden and through contact with similar organisations in other countries. Key members of the organisations are also E.C.E.D members and the society welcomes all contacts with similar organisations throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Correspondence should be sent to:

The SPR are co-ordinating this venture and are asking authors to fund the translation of their own papers. The costs are comparatively low at 5 DM per manuscript page or $5.00 per printed page. If you would like to support this venture and see your own work translated you should send your paper to:
Prof. H. Kachele, European SPR vice President, Abt. Psychotherapie, Klinikum der Universitat Ulm, Am Hochstrasse 8, D-89081, Germany.
