Suspending Email from Mailbase |
If you are going away, and want to stop receiving email while away, send a message to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk with the command
suspend mail LISTNAME
Type the name of your list instead of LISTNAME
You will remain as a member of the lists, and on your return, you can resume mail by sending a message to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk with the command
resume mail LISTNAME
If you belong to more than one list, you can send this command to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk
suspend mail ALL
And this command will tell Mailbase to start sending you email from all your lists:
resume mail ALL
What is suspend?
Suspend is a command which temporarily stops you receiving email from Mailbase. You'll
still be a member of all your lists; you just won't receive any email.
What's it for?
The suspend command is useful if you are going away, whether on
holiday or business, and you don't intend to access your email while away.
It halts messages from Mailbase so you don't come home to an overflowing mailbox.
What happens if I go away without suspending my email?
If you belong to a busy list you could receive a lot of messages and
your mailbox may fill up and run out of space. If this happens you will
come back to an overflowing mail box, your email will stop working, and
the list owner will receive error reports.
But I don't want to miss any messages while I'm away
Messages sent to your list will be archived and stored on the web, so
you can catch up on the the messages you have missed. If your list is a
closed list, and doesn't have a webpage, you can access message archives using
email.
Mailbase says you're not a list member
If your email address has changed recently, Mailbase will not recognise you as a list member. Contact your list owner and they will remove you from the list. You can then rejoin it.
Vacation Programs
Some people use vacation programs which send an automatic reply to any message received while they are on holiday. If you use a vacation program, please make sure that it does not send any messages to Mailbase lists.
Forgetting you've suspending your email
People often go on holiday, suspend their email and then never send the resume command. So they are still list members, they just never receive any messages.
