I must confess that I personally find the fact that all messages on this
particular list are automatically archived on the Web has frequently
inhibited me from posting my thoughts on a variety of topics.
I have never been especially shy about submitting my own work for possible
publication once it has been repeatedly re-worked and is in fairly coherent
shape.
Also (as many of you know), I am hardly reluctant to share some of my
half-baked ideas informally.
Nonetheless, I am not at all comfortable with having my immediate,
off-the-cuff comments and loose speculations consigned to an archive that
is essentially available worldwide for an indefinite period of time.
Consequently, when I cannot resist responding to some specitic message on
this list, I typically reply directly to its author; otherwise I continue
to 'lurk' in the shadows.
This is not so much a complaint as it is sort of a general apology for my
not being an active participant in those discussions which are relevant to
my own theoretical interests and limited expertise.
