There are a range of card sort methodologies in various disciplines, but they share asking people to put things into piles. For example staff in an residential service might each be given a pile of cards with the names of clients from the last year that all the staff know. Each member of staff is asked to put the cards in piles representing groupings that make sense to them when distinguishing between clients. These methods offer very flexible idiographic exploration of people’s own categories.
