Term used for the person taking final responsibility for a research project. In a world in which ethical, moral, responsibility is generally bureaucratised and dislocated it’s an interesting mapping to an individual.

In the research world there can be a distinction between PI and CI particularly in multi-centre studies but if you’re in those realms you shouldn’t be getting such definitions here!
